    Bulldog Root Beer

A Modern Craft Root Beer with Classic Character

Every great root beer has a story. Some reach back more than a century. Bulldog Root Beer began much more recently, but with the same determination to create something distinctive.

Bulldog was conceived in California during the growth of the American craft-beverage movement. Entrepreneur John Shegerian, a Fresno State graduate, set out to develop a premium root beer rather than revive an old brand or reproduce a forgotten formula. The new drink would be built around a smooth honey-and-vanilla character and ingredients chosen for flavor rather than simply for economy. Shegerian is consistently identified in company and biographical sources as Bulldog Root Beer’s creator and founder.

Developing the final recipe was entrusted to professional brewmaster Teresa “Teri” Fahrendorf, then corporate brewmaster for Steelhead Brewing Company. Fahrendorf later explained that the desired flavor was unusually specific and required approximately two years of development. Bulldog’s own history records that nine experimental batches were prepared before the recipe was judged ready.

Even before the root beer reached a wider market, the brand’s identity was being formally protected. The federal application for the BULLDOG ROOT BEER trademark was filed on September 17, 1996, in the soft-drink category. It later became United States registration number 2,192,654, and the active trademark is held by Bulldog Beverage, LLC.

Bulldog was publicly introduced in 1997 and received early attention in the spring issue of Fresno State’s alumni magazine, which featured the young company as an example of entrepreneurial development. Regular contract-brewed bottled production was reported by Fahrendorf as beginning in 1998. The root beer was produced for Bulldog by a California microbrewery while the company concentrated on building the brand, developing sales, and expanding distribution.

From the beginning, Bulldog emphasized the ingredients and character of the finished drink. The recipe used cane sugar, honey and real vanilla, producing a rich but gentle flavor rather than the sharper profile of many heavily carbonated root beers. Bulldog also promoted softer carbonation so that the vanilla and honey aromas could be more easily appreciated. Contemporary coverage noted the use of pure vanilla and California honey, while the company described the result as a smooth honey-vanilla root beer.

The two bulldogs pictured on the label, Barley and Hops, added personality to the young brand and reinforced its connection with the brewing world. The Bulldog name also reflected the company’s Fresno roots and its association with Fresno State’s Bulldog identity. A contemporary root-beer survey described the beverage as being made in honor of the university mascot.

During the early 2000s, Bulldog moved beyond its local beginnings. Fresno newspapers documented the company’s growing retail presence, while Fresno State alumnus Garrett Jones helped manage sales, marketing, production and brand development. Jones placed Bulldog in regional supermarket chains and later secured national distribution through Cost Plus World Market, bringing the root beer into 188 stores across 23 states.

Today, Bulldog continues to be bottled in glass and enjoyed by those who appreciate the craftsmanship and flavor that inspired its creation in 1997.
