The story of Dad's Old Fashioned Root Beer began in the 1930s, when partners Barney Berns and Ely Klapman developed their distinctive root beer in the basement of Klapman's Chicago-area home. Inspired by Ely's father and the generations of dads who made homemade root beer for their families, they created a beverage that celebrated an American tradition. The result was Dad's Old Fashioned Root Beer, a name that would soon become familiar to families across the country.
First introduced in 1937, Dad's quickly gained a loyal following for its rich, smooth flavor. On September 24, 1938, the company filed its first federal trademark application for Dad's Old Fashioned, receiving registration on February 14, 1939. What began as a Chicago-area favorite soon grew into a nationally recognized brand through an expanding network of independent bottlers.
Dad's became especially memorable for its family of bottles: the half-gallon "Papa," quart-sized "Mama," and smaller "Junior." Together with clever advertising and the famous offer of a Mama bottle for just a penny with the purchase of a Papa, these distinctive packages helped make Dad's a household name. By the late 1940s, Dad's had become one of America's best-known root beers, a favorite enjoyed by generations of families.
Through changing times and ownership, Dad's Old Fashioned Root Beer has remained a beloved American classic. In 2007, Hedinger Brands, LLC acquired the brand, continuing its legacy through The Dad's Root Beer Company, LLC, headquartered in Jasper, Indiana. Building on the success of its original root beer, the Dad's family has grown to include Diet Root Beer, rich and creamy Red and Blue Cream sodas, refreshing Orange Cream, and classic Cream Soda. Each brings its own distinctive flavor to a name generations of soda lovers have come to know and trust.
