  • HISTORY OF THIS SODA

Every great soda has an origin story, but few can match Frostie's. In 1939, George Rackensperger introduced Frostie Root Beer in Catonsville, Maryland, from one of the most unlikely bottling plants in America—an abandoned jailhouse. During the closing years of the Great Depression, Rackensperger rented the former town jail and transformed it into a working soft drink plant. The old police garage became the bottling room, while the jail cells stored sugar, empty bottles, and other supplies. What began as a creative solution to launching a new business quickly became one of the most memorable success stories in the soft drink industry.

Unlike many soda histories that begin with a pharmacist experimenting behind a drugstore counter, Frostie's story is wonderfully visual. Imagine a determined entrepreneur converting an abandoned jail into a bustling bottling operation, where yesterday's jail cells became tomorrow's storerooms and a handcrafted root beer was born. It's the kind of authentic American story that vintage soda enthusiasts love to discover. Consumers quickly embraced Frostie's smooth, creamy, old-fashioned root beer, and demand soon outgrew its unusual first home. The company expanded into a modern bottling plant and built a nationwide network of independent franchised bottlers, allowing local soda companies across the country to produce and distribute Frostie while maintaining its signature flavor and quality.

By the 1970s, Frostie had become one of America's best-known regional root beer brands. The company even acquired the famous Stewart's Restaurants and Dog n Suds drive-in chains, placing three iconic names in American root beer history under the same corporate umbrella for a time. More than 85 years after its remarkable jailhouse beginnings, Frostie continues to celebrate the timeless taste of traditional root beer and expanded soda line. Every bottle is a reminder that great ideas don't always begin in grand factories or laboratories—sometimes they start in the most unexpected places, proving that a little ingenuity, hard work, and a memorable recipe can create a lasting American classic.
